Technical fabrics need a different playbook than cotton tees. Here are five mistakes we see all the time — and the fixes that keep gym clothes smelling fresh and performing longer.
1. Using fabric softener
Softener can coat fibres and block moisture-wicking performance. For synthetics, skip softener and use a detergent formulated for activewear.
2. Washing with hot water
Hot water can break down spandex and Lycra. Cold water cleans sweat and odour effectively while protecting elasticity — always check the care label.
3. Tumble drying on high heat
High heat weakens fibres and causes fading. Air dry when you can; if you machine dry, use the lowest heat setting.
4. Letting sweaty clothes sit in a gym bag
Bacteria and odour compound when damp gear is sealed away. Air items out or wash as soon as practical.
5. Using the wrong detergent
Everyday detergents may not break down sweat and bacteria trapped in performance fabrics. Athletic-specific formulas are worth it.
